Nursery World - Essential resources: All inclusive
The best early years SEND resources promote inclusion and enrich continuous provision for all learners, Nicole Weinstein discovers
‘Too often, settings only use visuals with one child who has communication difficulties, but a whole-class approach is far more effective. When everyone has access to visuals, no-one is singled out,’ Fry says
Used at snack time, voice-recording buttons allow children to press their choice of food, such as ‘banana’ or ‘apple’, which offers instant feedback and helps them understand cause and effect while communicating their preferences.
Voice-recording buttons can be purchased from educational suppliers, but there are also ‘low-cost options available from pet stores on Amazon’, explains Fry, whose consultancy service recognises the impact of budget restrictions and focuses on offering affordable, creative alternatives
Fry advises including a box of each child's favourite toys or objects to encourage familiarity and engagement, along with personalised books and cause-and-effect activities. She also advocates making homemade resources with household items to promote independence, communication and shared play for all developmental stages.
‘Pulling Velcro bricks off a Pringles tube and posting them through the lid is great for hand-eye co-ordination. The child has to hold the tube with one hand, pull the brick off with the other hand, and post it through a square cut out in the lid. We buy our Velcro from Temu and stick it over plastic blocks,’ she advises.
‘Another simple posting activity involves putting pipe cleaners through a metal sieve or a colander. These activities occupy a child's time and their hands.’

3 EAL SCAFFOLDING STRATEGIES - Consilium Education
Laura Spargo suggests some practical strategies for teachers to help EAL students thrive in the international classroom.
According to Steve Strand OBE, Professor of Education at the University of Oxford, it takes children who are new to English at least six years to become proficient in academic English.
If children are able to link a word with an action, they are more likely to remember that word. I have been teaching children some key classroom vocabulary, such as pencil and whiteboard, using Total Physical Response (TPR). TPR connects a word with an action, for example, a teacher writing on a whiteboard or a child using a pencil. The student can help to create the actions themselves, and this serves as a powerful memory aid for them
Calming Doodling and Tracing Activity - Vivaldi Winter Largo from The Four Seasons- Musical Song Map
Trace the glyphs in Antonio Vivaldi's Winter Largo! This activity is a "doodly" way to follow along with this slow and beautiful winter classic. Students will connect with the music through focused and expressive movement, as well as drawing/doodling (see downloadable map below). For elementary students in music class or the general classroom.
⚫️ How to use this activity:
Students will trace the glyphs as the music plays, following the speed and shape.
• They can use scarves or ribbons, they can trace in their with their finger, or they can use a coloring utensil to trace the glyphs on the paper map (free download here: https://bit.ly/winterlargotracingmapadm)
• Repeating sections will have similar glyphs and colors. The way they are traced matches the music, so be sure to follow the pace of the color
